Good Chop reached out and wanted me to try out their meat delivery service, so I said, “Sure, why not?” (Because who in their right mind would turn down free meat, am I right?).

My box arrived; I’ll show you what I got, how I cooked it, what I think about the quality, and more.

What is Good Chop?

Good Chop is a meat and seafood delivery service that guarantees quality American meat that is free of hormones or antibiotics.

Their products come frozen and packaged individually, so you can pop the shipment in the freezer and defrost each item as needed for cooking.

a Good Chop box surrounded by packets of meat

Good Chop differs from some of the other meat delivery options that we’ve reviewed in the past because it’s a subscription service. Instead of picking a few items for a one-time shipment, Good Chop gives you the option to set up a recurring delivery so that you can keep your freezer stocked with meat all of the time.

You can choose to receive deliveries every four, six, or eight weeks, and they offer three different size options:

  • Medium – Good for individuals and couples, up to 36 portions or 14lbs of your choice.
  • Large – Good for mid-size families, up to 72 portions or 28lbs of your choice.
  • Extra Large – Good for big families and large freezers, up to 108 portions or 42lbs of your choice.

The pros and cons of this type of service

Pros:

  • You will always have meat in the freezer
  • No need to worry about purchasing meat at the grocery store each week.
  • Saves money buying in bulk.

Cons:

  • Less variety – The “medium” option only allows you to pick six different cuts every month, so you don’t have the same array you would have by shopping for cuts individually.
  • Out of sight, out of mind – sometimes I forget what I have packed away in the deep freezer, and when I’m trying to plan meals, I have to go digging to remember what I have to work with.

My Good Chop Box

The box that I received had a good variety of cuts:

  • Boneless pork loin roast
  • Pork tenderloin
  • Beef sirloin tips
  • Beef ribeye steaks (2)
  • Beef ranch steak
  • Steelhead trout

How I cooked my Good Chop meats

I wanted to cook a different meal each night with a different cut of meat. Since I have a small family (three people), each cut was more than enough to feed us, and we even had some leftovers each night.

Boneless pork loin roastI used the pork loin to whip up my Easy Smoked Pork Loin.

The pork was great quality and didn’t require much trimming, which I was happy about. It was flavorful and enough to feed my family for two nights.

Pork tenderloin: I used the pork tenderloin to make my Juicy Smoked Pork Tenderloin with Mustard BBQ Sauce.

I was a little disappointed at how small the tenderloin was compared to the ones I purchased at my local grocery store, but the flavor and quality were spot on.

The tenderloin is enough to feed two people at most, so keep that in mind if you have a larger family.

Beef sirloin tips: I used the beef sirloin tips to make a batch of my Grilled Garlic Parmesan Steak Bites, which were delicious.

They were well-trimmed, and I could take them straight from the package onto the skewers without additional trimming. They had a wonderful, lean beefy flavor that we really enjoyed.

Beef ribeye steaks: I decided to keep the steaks simple and grilled them on my gas grill for a quick and easy weeknight dinner.

There was not as much marbling as I like in my steaks, and they were leaner than I’m used to seeing with ribeyes. I’m from Texas, so I’m a bit picky and spoiled regarding steak quality.

While the flavor was fantastic, I would probably skip the ribeye steaks next time I order and grab them from the local butcher instead.

I still have the Steelhead trout and the beef ranch steak in my freezer, but I will update you guys when I decide to prepare them.

I have to say that I was happy to receive fish in the shipment, as I’m used to getting meat deliveries with just pork, chicken, and beef. It’s always nice to have some variety, so I was happy to get some fish to play around with.

Should you try Good Chop?

Good Chop is a great option for people who want to skip the hassle of buying meat at the grocery store each week but still want to have good-quality meat options in the freezer.

It’s also a great option for large families that need to put meat on the table affordably.

None of the cuts were pre-seasoned and were minimally prepared, so it’s a great option for the home cook who wants to create a variety of recipes with the meat they have on hand.

I appreciate their commitment to not using antibiotics or hormones in their meat. I also love the fact that all of their meat is raised and harvested in the USA, so you know you are getting American-quality meat in every shipment.

  1. Buyer Beware! ⚠️ The meat is low quality especially the chicken wings & legs. I purchase their $150 box back in August, & was solely disappointed. I have ordered from places like Omaha Steaks, so I do know quality when I see it. When I cancelled for my next delivered to come, I cancelled noting their poor quality. Upon speaking with a real person on the phone, she tried to throw their bad meats on me, I turned it down stating why would I try it again. Why did this company tried & attempted to bill me for $129.00 this past weekend here in December. I truly believe the woman I spoke to In September to cancel my order tried to bill me, even when I cancelled.

⚠️This company is problematic & just to note watch your account for any suspicious charges you may not recall charging for. This is one of those companies that will try to get over on you. These meat plans aren’t worth the price. You will better off spending your money with my current meat company I am dealing, as They are in competing with, which is Butcher Box & I am a happy camper since I switch & you should to, as this company means what they say with the humanly raised & you will be glad you did, plus they offer more variety with options like lamb & so much more.

    1. I had a similar experience, my orders was left outside my apartment building which is a public place. And off course it was stolen, i left an instruction on how delivery should be made when I made the order , yet. Naturally I cancelled my subscription and requested a refund .

  2. well I was considering changing to good chop after receiving a flyer in the mail. I have been a long time customer with Butcher Box and have minor issues which they addressed promtly. My concern with Butcher Box was that I saw a decline in meat quality, after voicing my concern the next shipment was elevated to a higher standard. Two times of quality concerns in over 3 years as a customer isn’t bad.
After reviewing the comments of some of your customers, bad quality and billing issues, along with delivery problems I think I will stay with my current subscription. Sorry Good Chop, I really hoped you would have been better than the other meat delivery services. I will revisit in the future to see if the concerns have worked them selfs out in the new growing company….

  3. Tried good chop, and the meat wasn’t bad. Unfortunately the customer’s service was terrible. I was flat out lied to. Was forced to cancel my subscription. Would not recommend good chop.

  4. Good job was mediocre. I ordered porterhouse steaks and I got T-bone steaks. There is quite a difference. The fillet was barely present. All the steak and meat I did get was cut way too thin. It was not that cuts at all. The only good thing on good job was the bacon and it was barely enough bacon for a family to eat. I ordered peceynia and it was not cut well at all. They were triangles of meat your best to go to a reputable butcher and get to cut some meat. You actually really want. I paid more for lamb loin from good shop than I did from my high-end butcher here in town.

  5. To the Good Chop Support Team,

I am writing to formally document my extreme disappointment with my recent order and the unacceptable service I received over the phone today.

I decided to try your service because I wanted a simpler way to purchase quality meat without the hassle of grocery store shopping. However, the products I received did not match the quality advertised. The chicken wings were abnormally small and poorly shaped, and the steak was of very poor quality.

When I called to resolve this, the representative was dismissive and argued with me regarding the quality of the items. When I requested to cancel my subscription and asked for an email address to send photographic evidence of the meat, the representative became rude and hung up on me after stating she would cancel the order.

Please confirm the following in writing:

That my subscription has been fully cancelled and no further charges will occur.

The status of my refund for this unsatisfactory shipment.

I have attached photos of the meat I received for your records. I look forward to your prompt response.
